Tips for Designing Important Rooms for Your Custom Home

You’re finally in a position in your life where you can design your custom home!
Perhaps you’ve had certain ideas of what you would like to see in your dream home for some time. Or perhaps you recently saw the perfect idea on that show you watched on HGTV. Whatever your ideas are however, there are some tips you should follow when planning the layout of those important rooms in your custom home.
Brainstorm ideas with your family
Unless you are single, then designing your custom home should be a team effort. Rather than just relying on your own ideas, you should sit down with your family and talk about their ideas. Discuss your daily routines and figure out what kind of home is going to work best for everyone in your family.
Decide what kind of features will offer you both style and function
Just because a room pictured in a magazine or on a website looks amazing, doesn’t mean that it will work for you and your family.
Do you need a lot of space for entertaining? Do you require a room with lots of storage to accommodate your family’s hobbies?
Think about your family members and their lifestyles and determine what your home will need to have in order to accommodate those lifestyles.
Don’t forget the “B” word!
That’s right, we are talking about your budget. When designing a custom home, it can be easy for your budget to get out of control. Take some time to figure out what it will cost to live in your new neighborhood including property taxes, utilities, mortgage payments etc.
Once you have a monthly budget in mind, you should discuss it with your building team so that they can also keep your budget in mind when drawing up the plans for your custom home.
Work with a Building Team That You Trust
While you may have a lot of ideas for the important rooms in your custom home, it will be up to the designers, architect and builders to bring it all together. In some cases, they may advise you to do something a little different because of their experience with similar homes.
It is important therefore that you have a team that you trust. Before choosing a builder, be sure to check out things like their portfolio, references, BBB rating, etc.
When you are confident that you are working with a team that has your best interests in mind, it will help you to have more confidence in the entire process.
