Tips for Hiring a Custom Home Builder in Toronto in 2021
If 2021 is the year that you finally take the plunge and build your very own custom home, then one of the first steps you will want to take is finding the right custom home builder in Toronto. Since there are many to choose from, here are a few helpful tips that will hopefully serve to help you find the right builder for you.
1. Be organized.
It will be extremely difficult to find the right custom home builder in Toronto if you do not know what you want out of a custom home. You don’t have to have exact plans or anything (that is the builder’s job), but you should have an idea of what you are looking for as well as have a good idea of what your budget will be. When you meet with potential builders, it is also helpful if you already have your financing in place – and
if you already have your lot, you should come prepared with information about that as well (size, zoning, whether it’s been serviced, etc.)
2. Referrals and references.
One of the best indications of whether or not you will be happy with the work of your custom home builder is whether or not they have referrals and references from happy customers. One way to get these is to ask friends and family members who may have had their own custom homes built. Or, if you don’t know anyone with a custom home, ask any builder that you are considering working with for a few references from satisfied clients.
3. Take a look at their past projects.
Most custom home builders will be willing to let you look at their portfolio of homes they have built in the past in order to help you determine if you like their style. This may be in a hard copy form or on their website. You may also wish to take a drive past some of their homes to see what you think.
4. Talk to them.
Communication with your custom home builder is going to be key to ensuring that you will really get the custom home that you want. Ask them about who they work with – whether or not they outsource. Ask them about warranties (and make sure any warranties are spelled out in your contract.). Ask any other questions you may have and make sure that you feel comfortable working with them.
